Cleveland.com, Music Box Supper Club team up for live Tina Turner podcast event during Rock Hall week

CLEVELAND, Ohio – With the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony just a month away, cleveland.com is putting on a special event focused on one of this year’s biggest names.

Tina Turner will be the subject for the first live recording of cleveland.com’s CLE Rocks Podcast, which looks back on the most historic music events, places and people in Northeast Ohio history. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the Music Box Supper Club. Tickets are $7.

Turner will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Friday, Oct. 30. The live podcast recording, titled “CLE Rocks Presents…Tina Turner & the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” will be hosted by cleveland.com life & culture reporter Troy L. Smith and feature a panel of local music experts talking about Turner’s legacy and her legendary solo concerts in Northeast Ohio.

Photographer Janet Macoska has shot everyone from David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen to Led Zeppelin and Queen. Macoska photographed Turner’s “Private Dancer Tour” at Richfield Coliseum and calls the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll one of the best live performers she’s ever witnessed.

“It was glorious,” Macoska says of that Aug. 22, 1985 concert in Richfield. “She’s just shooting out energy the way Springsteen would shoot out energy or Jagger. I just loved the show top to bottom, just watch this woman take charge of 20,000 people.”

Barry Gabel, senior marketing and sponsorship sales for Live Nation Cleveland was working for Belkin Productions in 1983 when Turner made her first solo run opening for Lionel Richie at the Coliseum.

“She was given that short period of time to play and she slayed everybody,” says Gabel. “She was the perfect setup for Lionel because she was incredibly high energy. She just did the six, seven, eight songs, whatever she did, and people were just so psyched to see Tina.”

The Oct. 27 panel will also feature Michael Gallucci, managing editor for Ultimate Classic Rock. Gallucci reviewed Turner’s final concerts in Cleveland on the “Twenty Four Seven Tour” in 2000 when he worked for Cleveland Scene.

Nwaka Onwusa, vice president and chief curator for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, will also be on the panel. Onwusa is busy organizing this year’s Inductee Exhibit, which will honor Turner and the rest of the Class of 2021 on the museum’s Hall of Fame floor.

CLE Rocks Presents… is a live podcast recording series that will take place monthly at the Music Box Supper Club. For more information on the event, visit the venue’s website.
