Movies That Get Too Much Credit Reddit

“Even if you disregard the numerous ‘that did not age well’ moments, the pacing is atrocious.”

Have you ever finally gotten around to watching a movie that everyone around you loves and can’t stop talking about, only to discover that it’s just not as good as people made it out to be?

Yeah, me too. And so have plenty of other people. That’s probably why there were so many responses to this Reddit user asking the film lovers of r/AskReddit, “What movie gets more praise than it should?” Here are 27 of the more controversial responses.

Responses have been edited for length and clarity.

1.

Frozen. If it wasn’t for one or maybe two songs it would’ve been completely forgotten about. The story is just so incredibly bland by Disney standards.”

2.

The Breakfast Club. Even if you disregard the numerous ‘that did not age well’ moments, the pacing is atrocious. You’ll have two characters yelling at each other and making one cry in one scene, then sneaking off to make out the very next. It’s dumb.”

3.

“This might piss some people off, but Avengers: Endgame. The movie was really boring until the final battle. The whole time traveling segment went on way too long. There was also way too much downtime, which made for less tension, unlike Infinity War which kept me engaged the entire time. Three hours was just way too long.”

4.

“If I have to stay awake for the entire duration of Interstellar to save my life, tell my wife I love her.”

5.

A Quiet Place. The monsters had super hearing and would rush to kill you from miles away because your toy makes a noise, but they can’t hear you breathing noisily (or your heart beating) when they are practically next to you? No government thought to test a bunch of sound frequencies as weapons against a creature who hunts…by sound? Your kid has survived in this terrible apocalypse and will have seen people make noise and be slaughtered, yet he purposefully does something that is very likely to make a noise? Children in war zones learn very quickly to hide when violent militia groups come around. Then the answer of the characters to this is to have a baby…and the plan is to stick it in a box whenever it cries.”

Paramount Pictures

“Oh, and I may be remembering this one wrong, but I’m sure there were other ways for the dad to distract the monster than noisy suicide. I also found the characters individually very annoying, although the effects and scene construction was actually pretty good.”

Toy Story 4. Wasn’t as good as the other ones.”

“It was overkill. Like, I thought we said goodbye to everyone in the third one.”

“My top five favorite movies of all time include The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Departed, and True Romance. So I clearly like gangster movies. To answer the question: Scarface. It’s just not that good. It’s decent.”

8.

The Dark Knight. The movie hinges on Ledger’s (amazing) performance. But the rest of it is a ton of plot armor, boring subplots, and thinly drawn characters like Dent, Dawes, the Mayor, and even Gordon. The ‘choose the right thing or the satisfying thing’ set pieces aged poorly. They’re dull on rewatch. And the whole thing feels so Philosophy 101, like the kind of shit that angsty teenagers would say to each other while staying up late at night.”

Warner Bros. Pictures

Batman Begins was miles better. Original ideas, a genuinely fresh execution of an origin story, a fun secondary villain in The Scarecrow, and a banger of a final action scene.”

“I remember when every moody teenager in my neighborhood was obsessed with 300 like it was the epitome of badassery. I thought it was fun, but I knew guys that watched that film almost every day. It consumed their existence.”

10.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was really hyped because of all the old characters returning. But the plot is weak and some main characters were suddenly the side characters who didn’t add anything to the plot. Also, the stories didn’t add up and it had too many plot holes. It was fun to watch but in my opinion not as good as it is made out to be.”

11.

Ready Player One! Everyone who has read the book knows that the movie can’t even be called the same thing because they basically just took the names from the book and scrapped the rest.”

Warner Bros / courtesy Everett Collection

12.

Tenet. It tries so bloody hard to convince the audience it’s their fault that they can’t keep up with the plot, which in fact simply doesn’t make any sense.”

13.

“I often see The Usual Suspects being discussed in the same frame as movies like Fight Club and The Sixth Sense, in that the twist ending is clever in the way that it changes your second viewing. In those films, the actions of the other characters are completely reframed and make so much more sense on a rewatch. In The Usual Suspects, all the reveals are made in the last five minutes, and until that point, a viewer can’t piece together the truth themselves. There are very few seeded clues as to what’s really going on and nothing that would subsequently make your jaw drop. It’s still an enjoyable movie, but it’s not nearly as smart and twisty as some people give it credit for.”

14.

“Most comedies where Will Ferrell is the lead. Doubt they get much critic acclaim, but my crew of friends over the years love them. Ferrell is great with more minor roles, though.”

15.

“The Star Wars sequel trilogy. The characters are paper thin and somehow the story is even thinner whilst trying to be unique.”

Lucasfilm / courtesy Everett Collection

16.

Encanto. It’s really good but it’s not amazing. The third act was very rushed and they sorta underutilized the plot, since it had no human antagonist. It could’ve been better but it was a bit of an undershoot, in my opinion.”

17.

Taxi Driver. Watched it for the first time the other day and hated it. So boring, and the plot was terrible. I’m sorry, I just didn’t get it at all. Thought I was in for a guaranteed great time.”

18.

Deadpool 2. The movie itself was fine, but it failed to capture lighting in a bottle, as it wasn’t better than the first one. Russell the kid was written to be very annoying, Cable should’ve got more screen time, humor was a 7/10 at best, and the fridging plot point was questionable.”

19.

The Devil Wears Prada is one of the most boring movies I have ever seen, and I like fashion and Anne Hathaway.”

20.

“Old one, but I still can’t understand the obsession over Grease. Good choreography and that’s it. Cheesy, awful characters, and a stupid storyline. Horrible movie.”

Paramount / Courtesy Everett Collection

21.

“I’ve tried multiple times to get into Harry Potter. I grew up as they came out and I just couldn’t get into them. I even tried reading the books. Not my jam, I guess.”

Warner Bros / Courtesy Everett Collection

22.

Napoleon Dynamite. I watched it once and could not for the life of me understand why it is such a popular movie.”

Fox Searchlight / Courtesy Everett Collection

23.

“Unpopular opinion, but La La Land. The whole premise of the movie was that a stranger bumped into the main character in passing, and she holds a festering grudge for months, and then one day randomly bumps into him and expects him to remember her and apologize and acts like he owes her something. I’ve only turned a movie off halfway through twice, and this was one of the times. I really did try, but the plot was so boring and random I couldn’t finish it.”

Lionsgate / courtesy Everett Collection

24.

Boyhood. If it wasn’t for being filmed over such a long period of time, it’s a crappy movie that wouldn’t get much praise.”

IFC Films / Courtesy Everett Collection

25.

“The Mission: Impossible series. How many impossible missions do they need to complete before the movies start to be called Mission is Very Possible?”

Paramount / Courtesy Everett Collection

26.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. It’s at least an hour too long.”

New Line Cinema / Courtesy Everett Collection

27.

Joker. It’s the most unoriginal, pointless movie I’ve seen. All they did was redo The King of Comedy with hints of Taxi Driver. Joaquin’s acting was great, but the movie and its message was so awful.”
