Romcoms are back? More like they were never gone. This 82 minute movie is about two people who meet when they’re both fresh out of relationships. They bond. They help each other mess with the former partners who hurt them. Then they fall in love for real!!

I’m a big wuss when it comes to thrillers, so I will admit that I read The Menu‘s plot summary on Wikipedia before watching the film. So if I did that and still had the time of my life watching this darkly comic foodie film, it must be good right??

Not interested in what’s new and exciting? Why not watch a tried and true romantic comedy? Not every joke and minor plot development has aged well about Sweet Home Alabama, but romcoms take place in perfectly imperfect worlds, and that doesn’t necessarily have to stop you from watching.

What can I say about the Disney adventure that launched a franchise? It’s a near perfect movie! Sure, it’s also on Disney+ and you probably already own it on DVD if you have taste (jk jk jk) BUT it’s nice to have options.

Watching this movie as a kid, when you’re still impressionable and equally enchanted by muppets and David Bowie, hits different than watching it as a full grown adult. But who am I to scoff at a little nostalgia? Throw it back with the sweet and musical sounds of this spooky fantasy.

*Inhale* the Queen is coming. The coming-of-age movie–who among us can’t relate to being an awkward teenager and finding out we’re secretly royalty–is an iconic ’00s classic. Between this and The Devil Wears Prada (see below) you could really have an Anne Hathaway movie marathon without switching streaming services.

Back in the innocent days of 2019, Ford v Ferrari got kind of written off as a “dad movie” with lots of loud vroom vrooms. I think that’s supremely unfair! This movie is both a hoot and a holler. Christian Bale and Matt Damon are in maniac mode. The dads can have their serious fun following the true story sports epic of it all. I’m going to laugh it up and enjoy all the dudes rocking.

Hulu also has the original 1979 Alien (a real oldie for the streaming service) too, but I want to throw the James Cameron fans a bone and shout out the sequel on this list. It cemented Signourney Weaver’s place in Hollywood as an action heroine and for that we are thankful.

Hulu has a decent amount of foreign films, and Another Round is one of my favorites. It’s about a group of bored high school teachers who spice up their lives with a series of intoxication experiments. What would happen if you were just a teensy bit tipsy all of the time? Good things? Bad things? Latent alcoholism? You’ll see…
Hell or High Water (2016)

This movie is a modern-day Western starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, and Jeff Bridges. Pine and Foster play brothers who become bank robbers after a family injustice. The script was written by Taylor Sheridan, who went on to create a cowboy television empire with Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, and so on. He really knows his thing.
Nomadland (2020)

Feeling serious? It’s another Best Picture winner! Chloe Zhao’s movie about houseless nomads is a bit serious for a stream, but not what I would call hard to watch by any stretch of the imagination. It’s thoughtful and melancholy, not grueling.

Last year’s Hulu original romantic comedy, a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice set in the famous gay vacation spot, is a treat. It’s funny and heartfelt and perfectly cast. Fire Island tickles my romcom brain and my English student brain simultaneously.

It’s wild that this is one of the oldest movies on Hulu, but it’s still a classic. It’s an iconic action movie. To some, it’s an iconic Christmas movie. And Hans Gruber is an iconic Alan Rickman villain performance.

It’s good that this movie is streaming because it’s the kind you want to watch over and over and obsess over a new character each time. Sometimes I’m Andy. Other times I’m Emily or Nigel. Mostly, I admit it’s all about Miranda. And then there are days when all I care about is Nate’s grilled cheese.
Belle (2013)

Belle, a period piece based on a true story and directed by Amma Asante, is one of my personal favorites to recommend. At first glance, it’s like a Disney princess movie set in Jane Austen/Bridgerton times about a woman of color in England’s predominantly white upper society. Belle is independently rich, unlike most of the girlies in stories like this, so she’s truly free to marry for love. But when she gets involved in her father’s legal career, it becomes more than a charming romance.
Palm Springs (2020)

Hulu’s original rom-com starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti was a balm for the soul in 2020 when it dropped on Hulu right in the middle of quarantine. The two leads have great chemistry. It’s existential as well as romantic and funny. And despite the fact that it’s about a time loop scenario, you never know what’s going to happen next.

If the theme of your Hulu movie night is walling in the pain of a lost love, then this is the movie for you. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is about the brief affair between a lonely bride-to-be named Héloïse and a woman named Marianne who is commissioned to surreptitiously paint her portrait. It’s gorgeously made and romantic as heck with an ending that’ll punch you right in the gut.
