Each individual 12 months the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL) acknowledges Mississippi’s
finest writers, artists, and musicians by bestowing awards in innovative fields. This
12 months, Jennifer Torres, professor and 3D Spot Coordinator in The College of Southern
Mississippi’s (USM) Artwork and Layout program, housed in the University of Executing and Visible Arts, obtained an award in the Visible Arts class
for her piece entitled, Back garden Boats for Osage Park.
“Professor Torres is a distinguished artist whose trajectory spans an extraordinary array
of achievements. Her do the job in sculpture has been exhibited about the nation and is
an inspiration for our college students in their possess function. I am honored to present my congratulations
to Professor Torres for this prestigious award on behalf of the MIAL,” stated Dr. Chris
Winstead, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.
Torres and the other winners will be honored at the 43rd Anniversary Awards Gala in
Jackson, Skip., on June 11 at the Mississippi Museum of Art. All nominees and winners
will be honored at a reception prior to the banquet.
“I am quite delighted and honored to receive this extraordinary award,” Torres reported. “I
function challenging as an artist and professor. To be so identified by these kinds of an esteemed group

Torres also reflected on the integral function that USM played in her development as an

Torres commenced her studio training at the Art Learners League in New York Metropolis. She
went on to get paid a BFA at the Cooper Union and an MFA in Sculpture from the College
of Ga in Athens. She has worked in metal fabrication, casting, woodworking and
pictures, and educated as a cabinetmaker in New England. She has beforehand gained
quite a few awards which includes getting picked for a hugely-aggressive 2020 Mississippi
Visual Arts Fellowship and named as the Innovative Researcher of the 12 months at USM’s College or university
of Arts and Sciences.

The MIAL juried competition is a person-of-a-form in the state, as recipients are thoroughly

funded non-income that is supported by Mississippi Institutes of Better Studying and
users. Its founding members incorporate: Noel Polk, Aubrey Lucas, Governor William Wintertime,
